Are there any restrictions on domain ownership?

Registration rules apply to .ltd.uk and .plc.uk domains. Other domains are to all intents and purposes unrestricted. If you can't find a domain you like with the extension of your choice, then you may want to search for domains with other extensions. For example if you are looking for a personal domain try .me.uk or .org as you will have a greater choice of domains available.

The only domains with firm rules on registration are .ltd.uk and .plc.uk.

Guidelines for .plc.uk and ltd.uk Domain Registrations

Registrants of .ltd.uk domains are required to be private limited companies, and registrants of .plc.uk domains to be public limited companies, registered under the Companies Act 1985. The domain name must be exactly the same as the company name, with a few exceptions:

The only characters from a registered company name allowed in a domain name are a to z inclusive, 0 to 9 inclusive and hyphen. Certain words will be removed from the registered company name where they occur at the end of the name before the domain name is generated. They are "limited", "public limited company" and the Welsh Language versions ("cyfyngedig" and "cwmni cyfyngedig cyhoeddus") along with the abbreviations of these words, e.g. ltd, plc, cyf and ccc. Spaces between words are to either be ignored or replaced by a hyphen (-).

For example, 'Fictional Company Ltd' would be able to register fictionalcompany.ltd.uk or fictional-company.ltd.uk, but fictional.ltd.uk would not be accepted. Only 'Fictional Ltd' can register fictional.ltd.uk.

The application for .ltd.uk and .plc.uk domains must state the full name of the company as registered, along with the company registration number when ordering.
